French-speaking network dedicated to the rights of nature – Liberation

The trial of the century, the deliberations of the citizenissue

Animals or plants now have rights, with the European Court of Aquatic Ecosystems or the Tree Rights Declaration in place. A francophone network was created in 2021 to support all these initiatives and defend living organisms against activities that destroy them.

A space for discussion to question the changes in the world, the Trial of the Century is held every Monday in the Mucem Hall in Marseille. “Release”, event partnerIt provides articles, interviews, and forums on the topics covered. In the face of growing initiatives to recognize nature rights in France and Switzerland, local associations for the defense of nature and actors working on the dynamics have officially announced the creation of a francophone network for nature rights.

Everywhere, forest ecosystems and ecosystems are endangered by human activities: pollution, deforestation, mining, oil extraction, overexploitation of soil or resources, or the synthesis of land.

Our observation is as follows: current environmental law does not make it possible to effectively protect or conserve natural ecosystems, due to an unbalanced relationship between human activity and nature, to the detriment of all species. The rights recognized in nature make it possible to bring about a paradigm shift and restore balance to the relationship between man and nature. It is necessary to protect ecosystems even before they are destroyed, because repairing them is impossible. Man cannot replace nature. He cannot continue to oppose the rest of the neighborhoods.

The right to respect and renewal

Ecuador, New Zealand, Colombia, Australia and many other countries have already taken the lead. In these nations, ecosystems, animals, or plants win victories before the official courts, by granting them legal personality of their intrinsic value, and in particular to defending their rights to live and existence, and their rights to respect and renewal. The movement for the recognition of the rights of nature is growing all over the world.

In France and Switzerland, the movement is also progressing. On the banks of the Loire, the last natural river in Europe, a Parliament was born, started in 2019 by Polau-pôle Arts & Urbanisme which in 2019 started the process of the Parliament of the Loire with legal writer Camille de Toledo to give a voice to the river and its entire ecosystem. Last April, after the massive pollution of Scheldt by a multinational corporation, the Valentransition Association in turn supported the River Parliament project. In 2019, the ARBRES Association submitted a Declaration of Tree Rights to the National Assembly. European Commission. In September 2020, the Swiss association launched id eau “Appel du Rhône” to recognize the legal personality of the river, from its glacier to its delta.

From January to September 2021, the European Network of the World Alliance for Nature will organize the first European Court for Aquatic Ecosystems. He will judge five emblematic cases of environmental genocide in France and Europe.

A sea of ice is receding. Millions of tons of poisonous red mud lying in the heart of Kalank National Park, wiping out all aquatic life; The illegal use of mercury in gold mining in Guyana significantly affects the ecosystems and the people who depend on them; The waters of Lake Vättern, Sweden’s second largest lake, soon became unfit for consumption by nearly 250,000 inhabitants due to military activities and a mining extraction project; and the confirmed disappearance of 11 species of fish, as well as the threat of extinction of at least 38 other species, with the aim of developing 2,500 hydroelectric dams on the Balkan rivers.

Defend living in court

The rights of nature are an essential tool in the defense of life before justice so that it is not seen as an inert environment at the mercy of transgressions. Legal personality is already granted to corporations and other legal persons, while nature, which lives and supports us, is still deprived of its rights. Water passes through our air, our soil, and fills our cells, and in this sense it reflects the overall health of living organisms. Without water there is no life. Forests are the lungs of the earth, rivers are its veins, and it is urgent to recognize their rights!

With the signatories to this forum, today we are creating the Francophone Network of Nature Rights. Its goal: to accompany defenders of the rights of nature everywhere in the French-speaking countries of Europe to fight the activities that destroy it.

In 2021, because protecting the living protects ourselves, because together our voice is stronger, let us affirm loud and clear the urgent need to recognize the rights of nature!
