iPad: What Business Pros Think

During my work lunch, I put my iPad on my lap, under my bag. As soon as I take it out to showcase one of our projects, the “wow effect” is guaranteed! “Very proud of his Apple tablet, Nicholas Bordas, President of the TBWA Communications Agency, is full of praise for him. Sure, his company deals with advertising the apple brand. But his enthusiasm is shared by most of the leaders who have embraced this digital game. Even Xavier Bertand, Secretary General of the UMP party , no longer attend any meeting without an iPad!

He must have. The Apple tablet, which was introduced on May 28 in France, has blown winds of tech into businesses. With its wide, high-resolution touchscreen weighing just 680 grams and its Wi-Fi (or 3G, option) connectivity, the iPad appears to be a real contender for the mini PCs and laptops usually entrusted to CEOs. Against them, there are two strong arguments: its price – between 500 and 829 euros depending on the version – is lower than that of professional laptops.

And its unique design with apple sauce. “We organized a challenge for our salespeople with five tablets from among the collections. Some employees who won a week in the sun for 1,500 euros admitted that they preferred an iPad!” But the most urgent request came From the outside: “Customers quickly asked us about an app,” the head of the real estate network continued. They saw it as normal for a brand like ours.”

The missing tool. SeLoger.com CEO Roland Tripard took the lead: In March, he took advantage of a trip to the United States to purchase three iPads entrusted to its developers. their mission? Building applications prior to release in France. “It’s a tool that our jobs lack,” he explains. Thanks to it, we can assess the price of the apartment or carry out environmental diagnosis in real time.

The interest in the tablet is less evident in other sectors. Bouygues and Vinci, for example, don’t see the benefit of this on construction sites. As for Orangina Schweppes, our 250 salespeople are waiting for us to introduce them to… the software. “Our usual software vendors, such as SAP, do not have enough applications, notes Jean-Charles Tonin, director of IT at the beverage manufacturer. In addition, we are conducting studies on iPad security and our experts have not decided on this.

Security dilemma. This imperative to protect data has long ensured BlackBerry’s edge over Apple in businesses, especially banks. At Société Générale, the iPhone service was even banned from press service! But the iPad can invite itself into meeting rooms or equip mobile executives, they say at headquarters. Dell, Archos, HP, kings of netbooks, Asus and MSI are up front, anyway, sharpening their guns. Their tablets, of equivalent look and performance, started at less than €500! The war in the offices has just begun.

I approached her shortly before arriving in France to see what the competition was doing abroad: ABC series, on-demand movies from Netflix … I immediately noticed the difference with the iPhone: it is a real video medium in which you can watch i-Tele for several minutes without any problem. For me, being short-sighted, the reading convenience that the tablet provides, along with the double-tap zoom, is incomparable.
The iPad also solved my recording problem: I don’t like paperwork and GoodReader makes my life easier. Before the weekend in Brittany, I check the tides to plan my cruises, but due to the lack of real storage capacity, jobs are still limited. In my opinion, it is a tool primarily aimed at tech lovers.

A friend brought me a Wi-Fi iPad from the USA and I was sure I wouldn’t touch it! After all, I use it all the time: it’s so light that I take it everywhere to answer my emails and browse news sites. For photos and videos, I continue to use my stationary computer: I work on heavy files, which are impossible to download wirelessly. Furthermore, the “consumer push” aspect of Apple, which releases a new version every year, is starting to bother me.

I made three franks to buy it the day it was launched! I had a small, light Toshiba, but had to get it up and running…The quick start of the iPad allows me to take full advantage of my short breaks! I use it to transfer our trade brochures, my competition data, etc.
When traveling, its size and independence are ideal. But you can’t connect it to a TV screen, and it’s hard to watch PowerPoint for more than three people. At home, I hook it up to my guitar: the tuner, sheet music, TabToolkit for tables, it has it all!

Bernard Scully, CEO of Pastacorp (Rivoire & Carret, Lustucru…)
I got one for me and one for my wife. I already had a mini PC but an iPad with unparalleled ergonomics: almost instant ignition, design, lightness… My carrying case, personalized with my initials, I couldn’t do without. My only fear was the virtual keyboard, as I’m a fan of BlackBerry Keys.
To my surprise, the Apple tablet offers real comfort in writing, especially when dealing with 250 emails a day. I also use it to watch ads and visuals for our new pasta packages. And for my photo albums, I use ScrapPad: very simple. When I take the train, I often read a classic e-book. Or catch a pinball game with Pinball HD. My grandchildren love it!
